How We Compare
Data sources & methodology
Benchmarking cloud hosting is harder than it looks. This page explains how we approach comparisons honestly — including where the data comes from and where its limits are.
- What "TTFB" means
- Time to First Byte measures how long the server takes to begin sending a response after receiving a request. It's a strong proxy for raw server performance because it captures back-end processing, routing, and network latency together. Lower is better.
- CDN influence on Global TTFB
- CDN caching can reduce a provider's global TTFB dramatically — sometimes by 80–90% — but it measures CDN edge performance, not origin server speed. We rank by US origin TTFB (no CDN) to give a fair comparison of raw server capability. Global TTFB with CDN is noted separately with a † symbol.
- Data sources
- The benchmark values on this page are illustrative ranges derived from published benchmark studies, independent hosting performance reviews, and public testing data published between 2024 and 2025. Specific sources include reputable hosting review publications, load testing reports, and provider-disclosed infrastructure details.
- Load stability testing
- Load test labels reflect how providers performed under concurrent user simulations in published benchmarks. "Excellent" indicates consistent response under significant load; "Stable" means reliable with minor variation; "Good" reflects generally solid performance with some degradation; "Variable" indicates inconsistency under load.
- What comes next
- This first version uses aggregated published benchmarks to establish a credible baseline comparison. We plan to layer in original test data — consistent, controlled, and freshly run — as the site develops. Rankings will be updated when new data materially changes the picture.
Our Top Pick
Ready to switch to faster cloud hosting?
Based on origin TTFB and price-to-performance, Cloudways is our top recommendation for most use cases. Best raw server speed, flexible cloud provider choice, and a starting price that's hard to beat.
For global delivery with CDN included from day one, Kinsta is the premium alternative.
